This year at DEFCON, the hacker convention, I joined the Hard Hat Brigade with Topsy, a hard hat that entertains while scanning the wifi environment. A Home Office DND Button

I’m extremely fortunate that I have a true home office at our house. It’s my favorite room in our whole place with an both an internal door and a door to to the back yard, and it affords me plenty of room to store my various projects and geeky collections. Of course, the most important aspect of my home office is that it’s a room where I can get some time work on…well…these days I work on work in there.

Update: I forgot to mention it in the post, but if there is any interest I could release a generic version to the store and/or the source code to the app. Let me know: @thatmikeflynn I love screens. You love screens. Developers love screens! We have at least two or three on our desk and when that’s not enough we like to hang them all over the place so no matter where we look there’s a screen in there somewhere.

Amazon Dash Buttons are Awesome For Everything but Buying Stuff

Sell a wifi-enabled button to buy stuff on Amazon? Sure you’d have to make sure you can’t easily modify the button so that people can buy them and not buy stuff on Amazon with them, but that shouldn’t be too hard. Amazon had barely started selling their $5 “Dash Buttons” before this post on Medium showed up: “How I Hacked Amazon’s $5 WiFi Button to track Baby Data”.

Alexa, Lets Play Jeopardy!

I’ve been playing around with my new Amazon Echo and writing up some “Skills” for the Amazon Alexa voice assistant and so far so good! What I’ve got above is a link to a YouTube video I did demoing a “Jeopardy” skill. It’s not fully baked in that you can’t play a complete game of Jeopardy, but you can choose a category, get a question, and it will keep score for you.
