Someone Made a Hackers DVD Robot

It’s common knowledge that I love the movie “Hackers” and if you haven’t seen it you should…and in the meantime, you might not find the post all that interesting. For the rest of us: Someone made a tape robot that works the same way as it does in the movie scene where Zero Cool is fighting with Acid Burn over the local TV station!

Everything is a Remix: The Final Version

I’ve been a big fan of Kirby Ferguson’s work, and my fandom really started when Everything is Remix hit the web. A few days ago, Kirby uploaded this final updated version and announced that he will be stepping away from online filmmaking. If you haven’t seen Everything is a Remix, find an hour to give it a go.

Excuuuuse me, Princess

Polygon has a wonderful (and relatively short) oral history of the short-lived Legend of Zelda cartoon that was embedded inside of the The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! There were elements of the games, like sound effects and visuals, but the show mostly has Zelda and Link posted up in Hyrule castle defending the Triforce of Wisdom from Ganon while trying to acquire the Triforce of Power from the evil wizard himself.

Virtual Influencers - From Cartoons to Deep Fakes

Studio71 Germany has recently launched not one but two virtual influencers and they’ve done a great job with the implementation and marketing around this project (disclosure: I am the global CTO of Studio71). I’ve been thinking about it a lot and on the one hand this idea of a “fake” or “virtual” influencers comes and goes over the years and every time it comes back we all like to pretend that it’s a crazy idea.

A Mention in Variety

Techcrunch Gives the Finger to Journalism and Kicks Newborn Puppy While Slapping Your Mom

In the latest segment in the endlessly long syndicated program entitled “Every Thing is On Fire at Journalism’s House” we have Techcrunch writing an article about the new but only Wednesday mid-day level news of Amazon Web Services launching the DocumentDB service. I’ll let you guess what the title of this article, written by Federic Lardinois, is running in a (formally) respected tech news source.

My Current Media Diet - January 2019

In the vein of the wonderful and prolific Jason Kottke, I’d like to start sharing my current media diet on my blog. I’m not going to keep track of everything I read, watch, or listen to, but I do think a general review of what I’m consuming would be interesting to others and myself in the future.

Speaking at the Variety Big Data Summit

My career in technology has taken me to some interesting places over the last 10+ years: St. Louis (less interesting), Mountain View, Jerusalem, New York, San Francisco, and Beverly Hills, but this last trip to Beverly Hills was the first time I got to speak at a Hollywood event. I recently had the opportunity to be on a panel at the Variety Big Data Summit, and it was…well, I’m pretty sure I’m officially a fancy media executive now.

The Movie Hackers is 20 Years Old and I Still Love It

Every day there’s a new post on Reddit / Hacker News / Twitter / Bloop / Slammy / Buzzfeed about how some thing that we all loved has a nice round birthday and today it was “Hackers”. The cult class is 20 years old. Crazy. I’ve probably watched that movie 100+ times over the last 20 years.
